Today’s workforce is comprised of employees with diverse family structures and changing life responsibilities.
Single workers, with and without dependent children, have become an emerging population that has gained attention for work-friendly policies. Single adults make up 42% of the full-time workforce in the United States (Conlin, 2003). Since employee demographics have broadened to include an increasing number of unmarried singles, unmarried co-habiting couples, childless marital relationships, and single-parent families, the prevalence of single workers suggests that workforce policies address their employee needs.
