Changing Families: demographics, cohabitating couples (2007)
Statistic:
Six million households contain cohabitating couples (United States Census Bureau, 2007).
Source: United States Census Bureau (2007). Description of Sample:
“Demographic characteristics of households and families are collected annually in the March Current Population Survey (CPS) for the Nation. Since 1996, the relationship to householder item in CPS has contained a category “unmarried partner.” This category remains, but in addition, beginning in 2007, there is a direct question for adults living with a nonrelative that asks whether they have a boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner living in the household. In this way, unmarried partner couples in which neither is the householder can be identified.”
