Jeanne E. Arnold is Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles. She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Arnold served for more than a decade on the Society for American Archaeology’s National Historic Landmarks Committee, contributing to preserving the nation’s cultural heritage in association with the National Park Service. She has published extensively on the archaeology of the American Pacific Coast, focusing on Native American community and household organization, specialized labor and occupations, and the emergence of hierarchical sociopolitical relationships in traditional societies in California and British Columbia. She is studying the home spaces and material culture of Los Angeles dual-earner, middle-class families for the UCLA Sloan Center on Everyday Lives of Families. Her research examines expenditures of time in the home environment (including time used for household maintenance and leisure), clutter crises at the home, the roles of artifacts and the house in family identity formation, and related topics.
