Biography:

Eberhard Schaefer was born in 1962 in Germany. He received his M.A. in Political Science in 1991 from the Free University of Berlin. His range of work experience includes social work and adult education, work with fathers, writing, publishing, lecturing, and consulting. In 2002, he founded the "Berlin Fathers` Centre" (www.vaeterzentrum-berlin.de ), a registered non-profit NGO, and he continues as the head and developer of the organization. In 2006-2007, Schaefer was a project member of "European Fatherhood", the project for the European Handbook for work with fathers (see www.european-fatherhood.com, in English). In 2009, the Berlin Fathers´ Centre was awarded the title of one of "365 landmarks in the land of ideas" for most innovative and valuable ideas in Germany (see http://www.land-of-ideas.org/CDA/365_landmarks,240,0,en.html).

Schaefer is co-author of "Das Papa-Handbuch" ("Daddy Handbook," with Robert Richter, 2005, 6th printing 2009), the most popular handbook for new fathers in German, with more than 100,000 copies sold in several languages. He is also co-editor of a 2008 collection of research-oriented essays entitled "Vater werden ist nicht schwer? Zur neuen Rolle des Vaters rund um die Geburt" (How hard is it to become a father today? About the new role of fathers around birth"), together with Achim Woeckel and Michael Abou-Dakn.

Additionally, Schaefer has produced a number of essays, papers, online publications, and lectures on fathers, fatherhood, work with fathers, fatherhood policy. He lives in Berlin with his wife. Their son was born in 1982 and works as a physicist at the Free University of Berlin.
