Biography:
Alan Booth is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Human Development at The Pennsylvania State University and senior scientist in the Population Research Institute in 1991. Except for a two year appointment (1972-1974) as Senior Researcher at the Ministry of State for Urban Affairs in Ottawa, Canada, he held professorial appointments at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln until 1991. During his tenure at Nebraska, Booth served as chair of the department and Director of the Bureau of Sociological Research. He has authored more than 100 articles and three books. Alan served as editor of the Journal of Marriage and the Family from 1986 to 1991. He was president of the Midwest Sociological Society in 1990, chair of the American Sociological Association Family Section in 1991, chair of the National Council on Family Relations Research and Theory Section from 1996-1997, program chair for the National Council on Family national meeting in 2002, and recipient of the American Sociological Association Family Section Distinguished Career Award in 2002. He has served on the editorial boards of the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Journal of Marriage and the Family, and the Journal of Family Issues.
