A work-life balance is a real necessary part of the modern working culture. It should not be looked upon as "a perk" - it should be looked at as a productivity enhancer, if addressed correctly.

Flexibility in the workplace benefits us all - it is interesting to read about flexible working as a strategic lever which improves the bottom line.

I am a full supporter of a flexible workplace. While my working situation now greatly differs from my prior environment (currently a children's illustrator with a part-time copywriting and marketing consultancy job, writing children's musicals and taking freelance clients as available; previously at a desk 9-5 in the corporate world) I continually feel the frustrations of a rigid corporate mentality about work/life flexibility.

There have been several instances where I have been on a call with a potential client, excited that I may be able to help their organization really get off the ground with Internet marketing or corporate blogging, and then as the conversation turns to availability and start dates, I get hammered with the "...oh. Well we need someone on-site....we might be able to negotiate one day a month work from home, but we really need someone here to reinforce teamwork and be a part of things."

I can't think of an industry that would less require someone to be on-site than web copywriting and blogging! That is the joy in it - recognizing that creative minds work at all hours of the day or night depending on the person, and that despite geographic locations, people from all over the world can be a part of a cohesive team and work together to create something wonderful.

I look with hope to the future of our concept of a 'workplace'. Far too many people dread getting up and "going to work" each day. Life's too short. Computers have helped so many people have jobs that didn't even exist 5 years ago. We should embrace it, trust each other, and adopt a results-based system that allows not only flexibility for employers and employees, but a feeling of accomplishment and wellbeing with each assignment completed rather than a day in, day out meaningless drone of busywork just to fill the time because you 'have to be there'. Sounds like throwing away a lot of precious money that could be going to better causes to me!

I think a big deal with flexibility at the workplace is not taking your work home. It becomes a burden on your home life when you take work home with you. losing sleep over how to make a the next quick buck tomorrow is really a good way to get burnt out. Granted that working from home will allow you to get more done on a day to day basis but, you definitely need to spread out your relaxation and have time to clear your mind. This will allow you to gain more powerful ideas using other sources of intellectual queries.
