    There is also the Family Economic Self-Sufficiency standard (FESS) which calculates how much a family in MA needs in order to pay for “basic” monthly expenses(transportation, child care, housing, food, etc.). The FESS calculator (updated in 2006) provided by Crittenton Women’s Union allows for variation based on family size and composition as well as geographic location and proves to be a more realistic alternative to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL).

    Many other states have calculators like this one. WOW (Wider Opportunities for Women) is the national leader in creating FESS standards in 30 something states!
