Source:

Content contributed by Leslie Hammer as a Suggested Work and Family Class Activity for the Sloan Networks’ Resources for Teaching section.

Type: Other

Purpose
To gain insight into the expectations that adult children have with regard to the care-needs of their aging parents.

Steps
1. Contact an adult friend or family member who has a parent/in-law who is 60 years of age or older.

2. Share with them the assignment summary (below).

3. Obtain written consent to conduct an interview (in person or telephone). Put the written consent into a sealed envelope. Return the envelope to the professor. Do NOT write your name of the name of the interviewee on the envelope. Do NOT attach the consent form to your assignment.

4. Conduct the interview.

5. Summarize the conversation. Reflect on the respondents' expectations for his/her parent's(s') caregiving needs and his/her awareness of resources and supports.
