Work-Life Integration and Children's Mental Health

An Interview with Julie M. Rosenzweig
and Eileen M. Brennan
by Judi Casey and Karen Corday

Casey:
Why did you explore the intersection between children's mental health and work-life integration?

Rosenzweig:
We are located at a national research and training center that emphasizes children’s mental health and family support. When we began to look at the employment issues of the parents of children with mental health disorders, it became apparent to us that these parents were significantly challenged by finding and keeping employment. There were few work or community resources to support their efforts to meet both their caregiving and employment needs. We began to look at the notion of work-life integration for these families, which led to us examining where the research on children’s mental health and work-family studies intersect.

Work-Family Balance From a Gender Perspective: Some Observations From Finland
by Saija Mauno, PhD
University of Jyväskylä, Department of Psychology

The Gender Equality Index just recently ranked Finland as the second best country when it comes to gender equality. The Nordic countries (Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland) have long been known for their gender equality ideologies and practices. Accordingly, a dual-breadwinner ideology in which both mothers and fathers work full-time has characterized the Finnish society for centuries. As a result, different types of statutory family-friendly policies have been developed to help parents achieve better work-family balance and shared parenthood. In general, family-friendly policies are available to men and women employees alike.
