Sloan Network Updates and Reminders

Issues 9 and 10 of the Effective Workplace Series, Today's Diverse Families and Elder Care, are now available.

There are three new entries in the Work-Family Encyclopedia: Stereotypes: The Impact of Prescriptions on Workers' Experiences by Benjamin Lieberman, Child Labor: A Historical Perspective by Brian Gratton and Jon R. Moen, and Legal Professions and Job Demands: Implications for Work-Life Balance by Joan C. Williams.

The eleventh issue of the Policy Briefing Series, Supporting Workers Experiencing Domestic Violence, was mailed to policy makers across the country and is online in PDF format.

We now have a group of "Roving Reporters," scholars who will be sending us work-family news from around the world! They are: Saija Mauno of Finland, Jeanne Fagnani of France, Tripti Desai of India, Mina Westman of Israel, Sumiko Iwao of Japan, Anna Borg of Malta, Jarrod Haar of New Zealand, Laura den Dulk of the Netherlands, Nora Karasabbidou of Greece, Anne Bardoel of Australia, Maria das Dores Guerreiro of Portugal, and Nevenka Cernigoj-Sadar of Slovenia. Thank you to Suzan Lewis of Middlesex University, London, for setting up this exciting program!

Congratulations to the 2007-2008 Early Career Scholars! This Alfred P. Sloan Foundation-funded program, headed by Dr. Stephen Sweet of Ithaca College, serves to "bolster the career progress and continued commitment to work-family scholarship" of recent graduates of doctoral programs. The first cohort of Early Career Scholars includes: Kristin Celello of CUNY Queens College, Shannon Davis of George Mason University, Brian Hoey of Marshall University, Ann Huffman of Northern Arizona University, Kathyrn Hynes of Penn State University, Mila Lazarova of Simon Fraser University, Krista Lynn Minnotte of the University of North Dakota, Christopher Morett of Fordham University, Lori Muse of Western Michigan University, Debra Osnowitz of Clark University, Jennifer Romich of the University of Washington, Margaret Usdansky of Syracuse Universe, Monique Valcour of Boston College, Lori Wadsworth Romney of Brigham Young University, and Peng Wang of Miami University.

Congratulations to Christina Matz-Costa, Research Associate for the Center on Aging & Work/Workplace Flexibility, Sarah Morrison, Research Assistant for the Sloan Work and Family Research Network, and Sandee Shulkin, Project Manager for the Sloan Work and Family Research Network! They will present a poster-- "Adolescent Self-Reports of Health and Happiness: The Importance of Feeling Safe"-- at the 2008 Society for Social Work and Research annual conference.

Be sure to keep checking “What’s New in Work and Family” for the latest work and family links.
